Fire- The Original Workplace Hazard


Since the beginning of time, fire has been a hazard in our lives that affects our health and safety.   This program will cover basic fire prevention and protection practices for worker safety and damage control in the workplace. The program will cover best practices to assist your local fire department with extinguishing a fire.  The program will end with post-fire business continuity planning considerations to limit business downtime due to a fire.

Jim Leer is a Senior Loss Consultant for Penn National Insurance Company.  His safety experience spans over 30 years with a fire safety background in code enforcement, the volunteer fire service and insurance loss control.  His interest in fire safety started when he joined the volunteer fire service at the age of 16.  His formal education in fire safety started when he attended the Community College of Allegheny County earning an A.S. Degree in Fire Science and Administration.  He advanced his education earning a B.S. Degree in Safety and Environmental Management through Slippery Rock University and an M.S. Degree Safety Science-Technical, through Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.  He has been a Pennsylvania State Fire Instructor for over 20 years, obtaining certifications as a Fire Officer II, Instructor II, Hazardous Material Technician and a Vehicle Rescue Technician.
