About the Presentation

Fire Life Safety is a program developed to help Building Managers be aware of the system or systems in the building that protect them. Many times these systems go unchecked and can be the cause of major loss of life and property. This workshop will give you insight on how your Fire Life Safety System was designed along with ways to have it inspected.

Presenter Biography

Currently working for the National Energy Management Institute Committee as Chief Operating Officer of the Testing Adjusting and Balancing Bureau (ICB/TABB).  Serves on the SMACNA/SMWIA TAB Taskforce, HVAC Technician Certification Committee, Commissioning Taskforce, and liaison on the International Certification Board (ICB) for TABB.  Have given numerous IAQ seminars.  Have presented many TAB and FLS seminars and workshops for AIA, ASHRAE, CSI, SMACNA and SMWIA.  Member of the following ASHRAE committees, Duct Design-TC 5.2, Testing and Balancing-TC 7.7, Also involved in the ASHRAE committee to develop the ASHRAE Commissioning certification exam. Co-Chair of the ASHRAE Duct Construction Comitteee.

Duane Smith, Director of Training, National Energy Management Institute  
Presenter Biography

Duane has worked in the building construction industry for 24+ years, with the last 18 as a member of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation (SMART) local union #20 in Indianapolis, IN.  His experience includes: Owner/Operator of an HVAC residential service company, Foreman at a roofing and sheet metal company, JATC Instructor, and on August 7, 2017, he joined the National Energy Management Institute (NEMI) as Director of Training.
Duane completed his sheet metal apprenticeship in Indianapolis, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Labor Education from the National Labor College, and completed a graduate certificate program for nonprofit management at IUPUI.  He is an OSHA Outreach Trainer, HVAC Fire Life Safety Level 1 Technician, and an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector.  He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
